Jason Tatum

Jason Tatum is a dedicated advocate for community empowerment, restorative justice, and youth development. Born and raised in the East Bay, Jason’s passion for social change was instilled early through his involvement in grassroots organizing at his grandfather’s church. There, he honed his leadership skills by organizing fundraising initiatives, mentoring young people in public speaking, and coordinating community outreach programs. His experiences as an athlete further reinforced his commitment to teamwork, accountability, and perseverance, values that continue to shape his approach to leadership and advocacy.

Jason earned his Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies from California State University, Hayward, with a concentration in African American and Latino History. During his time at CSUH, he was elected President of the Ethnic Studies Academic Society, where he mobilized students to challenge budget cuts and tuition hikes while building coalitions with various student organizations. His leadership extended beyond campus, inspiring young people to engage in activism and policy reform.

Professionally, Jason has worked extensively in restorative justice, conflict resolution, and student engagement. As the Dean of Student Discipline and Culture at Youth Empowerment High School, he implemented restorative practices that significantly improved school climate and student outcomes. His expertise led him to serve as a Restorative Justice Coach with San Francisco Unified School District, guiding school administrators in shifting from punitive discipline models to inclusive, healing-centered approaches.

In addition to his work in education, Jason has been a licensed Realtor in Oakland since 2009, gaining firsthand insights into housing disparities and economic challenges affecting marginalized communities. His ability to merge education, advocacy, and economic awareness has positioned him as a powerful force for social change, committed to dismantling systemic inequities and uplifting underserved populations.
