From Mr. Derek's Desk, June 2026

Dear Northern Light School Community,

As we enter into summer break together, I want to pause and share deep appreciation for the many ways our community has been living our values of Courage, Accountability, Respect, and Empathy (C.A.R.E.). Each day, our students remind us that learning is not only about what happens inside the classroom, but also about how we show up for one another and for the wider world around us.

This spring, classrooms engaged with stories, histories, and voices of leaders and role models who have shaped our communities and our world, and our students asked thoughtful questions, made powerful connections, and reflected on individuals who inspire them in their own lives. I am especially grateful to the incredible teachers, parents, and Impossible Is Nothing visitors, who generously share their journeys, careers, and lived experiences with our students. Their willingness to be present, vulnerable, and reflective gave our scholars real-life examples of leadership, resilience, and joy.

In honor of Dolores Huerta’s legacy of organizing and advocacy, classes also participated in service activities that invited students to deepen their understanding of community responsibility. Whether cleaning and beautifying shared spaces, tending to gardens and outdoor areas, or learning about the impact of those before them, students leaned into the idea that their actions—big and small—have an impact. I am especially grateful to our faculty and staff for the care and creativity they brought to planning countless enrichment experiences this past year, weaving together history and hands-on service in ways both meaningful and age-appropriate.

Lastly, I am exceptionally grateful to YOU, our community of supporters, who allow the Northern Light School dream to continually shine brightly. As an alum and parent, I have the privilege of seeing the best qualities nurtured in our students every day: caring about others, leading with confidence and curiosity, and embracing a lifelong love of learning. Together, we are teaching our scholars that they have both the power and the responsibility to shape a more just and caring world.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership. I look forward to the ways we will continue to thrive together ahead.

In community,
Derek Boyd
