Student Life

Students at Northern Light School, experience a rich blend of artistic, athletic, and academic pursuits. Beyond the core subjects of Math, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies, all students take Spanish and P.E. Spanish classes focus on developing language skills, while also introducing students to different cultures of Latin America. P.E. classes focus on teaching students fundamental skills and emphasizing the values of sportsmanship and teamwork.

Through all of their pursuits, NLS students are encouraged to develop their own voices, to think critically, and to understand that they have the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

Gender Inclusivity

  • At Northern Light School, we recognize the importance of creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students and staff members, including those who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. This includes respecting their right to express gender identity, modify gender expression when crucial to one’s well-being, and to respect the existence of and contribution of LGBTQ+ people throughout history. We understand that to be engaged in learning, one must feel safe to express oneself and feel valued as a member of the community. Our commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment stands in keeping with Northern Light’s historic commitment to diversity, empathy, and the pursuit of social justice.

Advisory

  • Advisory is a weekly single grade level session, in which students discuss current events, leadership development and engage in social emotional learning. Middle school students work to grow as leaders in the school community, and identify their own strengths that they are interested in developing.

Wellness and Support Block

  • Students are supported on campus by NLS staff, trained to provide strategies to manage stressors and emotions that rise and fall throughout the school year. Teachers are followed up with regarding any situation that is impacting a student’s learning and wellbeing on campus, and a plan is made to support them.

Social Emotional Learning

  • Our staff understands that the social emotional health of our students is vital to a holistic, rigorous, and transformative educational experience. All teachers and faculty support students in learning to understand, live and thrive in the world, while developing a healthy sense of identity, emotional well-being, and interpersonal relationships. We help students practice aspects of the CASEL core competencies (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness) in an effort to enhance their development.
