Morning Circle - Beginning the Day in Community

For twenty-five years, each day at Northern Light School has begun with Morning Circle.  While our students are engaged in music and movement in their classes through the academic school day, there is also a special gathering every morning where all students in kindergarten through eighth grade join together to sing songs, recite verses, use movement, discuss current events and global issues, and to celebrate birthdays, cultural events, and special celebrations.  Through Morning Circle, we seek to support our students’ understanding of the "wholeness" of our educational family.  They are reminded of the interdependent nature of our school community, their local communities, and our global village.

Students created Lung-Ta Prayer Flags during Morning Circle to honor the cultural heritage of Nepal, Bhutan, India, and Tibet. The flags were inscribed with students' wishes and intentions for peace, hope, and healing. Please join us this Friday morning for the flag raising on our playground during a Morning Circle Peace Vigil!

Morning Circle offers our middle school students the opportunity to practice leadership skills and support their younger peers with caring, gentle authority. Each month provides opportunities for our educators to incorporate themes into Morning Circle, which allows our community to introduce elements and issues of the world outside our classroom walls into the academic school day.

Special Assemblies

Often, we have special assemblies where outside organizations come to visit our school and speak to our students about what they do. For example, we had the women's basketball team from The University of San Francisco College come and share their journey and hardships from a losing team to becoming the West Coast Conference Champions. Our own stellar basketball stars got to compete against their players in a shootout. See their visit below!
