Extended Day Program

Preschool Extended Day Program

Our preschool program offers morning care from 7:00 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. and our preschool afternoon care runs from 3:35 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The preschool extended day program follows the rules and regulations for licensing and is separate from the K-8 extended day program. Only a certain number of students can be enrolled based on the adults in the room. For this licensing reason, drop-in extended day is not an option for our Preschool program. The preschool extended day program enrollment is on a first come first serve basis. Priority will be given to families who turn in their contracts first. Once the program is full, families will be placed on a waitlist and will be notified when a spot is available.

For more information regarding the extended day preschool program, please refer to Preschool Academics.

K-8 Extended Day Program

Northern Light School offers an Extended Day Program that provides morning care and/or afternoon care for K-8 students. Our morning care is offered from 7:00-8:05 a.m. and is lead by Lamaine Kitchen, who came to NLS in 2015 and is Head of Morning Care.
The afternoon Extended Day Program runs from 3:50 to 6:00 each day (2:15 to 6:00 on Wednesdays).  For the 2016-2017 school year, Northern Light School is excited to partner with Higher Ground for our afternoon programming.  Higher Ground’s mission is “ to provide a safe and nurturing space where students are given both the tools and access necessary to be successful in the academic arena while exposing them and their families to varied cultural, artistic and fitness experiences that will assist in their development into happy, well-rounded and successful people.”  At Northern Light, Higher Ground instructors will work with students on team- and character-building as well as provide homework support.  In addition, the program will bring in enrichment instructors in order to provide students with new learning opportunities.

Our site coordinator from Higher Ground, Curtis Lee, will be on campus beginning at 10:00 A.M. each day in order to prepare activities for the afternoon as well as to coordinate with teachers to ensure that students in the afterschool program are getting the proper academic support.  Curtis is an experienced educator and Oakland native who was a co-author of Higher Ground’s Peer to Peer Restorative Justice Program.  In addition, Curtis was runner up for the 2015-2016 Jason Guinto Award, which is given to the top afterschool coordinator working within OUSD.
