Northern Light Heads to China!

In June, the Children's Peace Choir of Northern Light School has the incredible opportunity to share their message of kindness, compassion and joy with the world at the Expo 2010 Shanghai China. Singing in two-and-three part harmonies, the Children's Peace Choir creates global harmony through musical harmony.

"From the day a Northern Light School student steps on our campus, they begin a lifelong commitment and responsibility to achieve academically and make a difference in the world," said Michelle Lewis, Director. "Many of our students overcome unthinkable obstacles in day-to-day survival. But that does not lessen their responsibility to transcend borders and boundaries with compassion and mutual understanding. Participating in the Shanghai World Expo provides these children with first-time and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, but most importantly they are fulfilling the mission of their school and their education."

On June 15, the choir will travel with the San Francisco delegation to Shanghai. The delegation will be led by San Francisco Mayor Newsom and Sister City Committee Chairman James Fang. In addition, United States Senator Dianne Feinstein, former San Francisco Mayors Willie L. Brown, Jr. and Frank Jordan will be part of the delegation. Sister City Committee Chairman James Fang believes that "delivering messages that transcend world challenges, The Children's Peace Choir is a perfect addition to our delegation."

While at Expo 2010, the Children's Peace Choir will be featured at a gala dinner, have an exchange with students from a sister school, and have an opportunity to experience a vastly different culture.

The 11 member choir ranges in age from eight to ten years old. Under the direction of Caitlin Kara, the choir's repertoire ranges from original compositions to jazz favorites to classic rock. Ms. Kara has written several compositions specifically for the choir. In addition to singing, choir members play a stringed instrument of their choice.

Although this is their first international performance, the Children's Peace Choir has performed throughout the Bay Area at charity events and fundraisers for organization including: United Airline's Fantasy Flight, the Taylor Family Foundation's Day in the Park, the Hollywood Nights Gala Ball and Auction, and Dr. Jane Goodall's International Peace Day. The one message that resonates throughout each performance through their voices is a message of peace, love and compassion for all mankind.
