In December, the fourth grade class teamed up with United Airlines and Make-A-Wish to spread Christmas cheer to some very special wish kids.
Every year, United partners with Make- A-Wish to take wish children on a fantasy flight to the "North Pole." After flying around the Bay Area for an hour, the wish kids get off the plane and arrive at the "North Pole" where snow, elves and Christmas cheer greet them. This year they were also welcomed by Northern Light's fourth grade class singing Christmas carols. Huge grins broke out across the wish kids' faces as they heard the carols and saw the snow. It was a magical experience for everyone.
The fourth grade class was so moved by their experience that they've come up with their very own way of helping special needs children.
The fourth grade class saw that these special needs kids weren't able to participate in everyday activities like they do. According to Jordan, "We want these kids to have a chance to do the same things we do and get outside. It will help them feel better." As a result of this desire, the class decided to raise money to send three very special kids to Camp Arroyo this summer. Having experienced Camp Arroyo first hand, they thought that these special needs children would benefit greatly from attending the camp.
Over the past few months, the fourth graders have been holding different fundraisers including selling candy, Christmas ornaments, origami cranes and other items to fellow students and faculty. To date they have raised a little over $700.
As they continue to raise more money, their ideas keep growing too. They decided to change their original goal of sending 3 kids to Camp Arroyo, to 14 kids. They settled on fourteen so they could send one special needs child to Camp Arroyo for every member in their class. They are ambitiously trying to raise $3,500 over the next few months.
They know $3,500 is a lot to raise, but they are determined to make it happen. They firmly believe "Impossible Is Nothing!"
