Upper School
The Upper School Program at Northern Light School is composed of grades five through eight. Each grade has one mathematics and science instructor, and one head-room teacher who instructs in the subjects of language arts, written communication, and historical studies. Each classroom has between ten and sixteen students.
Curriculum
The Northern Light School Upper School curriculum presents its students with both traditional and innovative approaches to learning. The classroom environment is highly engaging and interactive, and it encourages students to become adept at integrating study with real-life experiences.
Upper School students take English and Language Arts, History, Mathematics, including Algebra, and Science. Spanish is taken as a course, and students begin advanced written and verbal communication in foreign language in grade five.
The Upper School curriculum also provides opportunities in Drama, including the Spring Musical, as well as Instrumental Music, including string quartet.
School community involvement is essential to the Northern Light School experience. Student clubs, including Math League, begin in grade four. Dr. Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots, an environmental and community involvement program, and student-to-student tutoring are just a few of the service experiences that make Northern Light School's Upper School program unique and challenging. Students become active role models in their immediate communities, forming the foundation for becoming leaders in their adult worlds.
