Tools for Peace
Tools For Peace was founded by the Venerable Lama Chodak Gyatso Nubpa in an effort to provide people of all ages and backgrounds with practical methods for cultivating compassion, peace, and well-being. Tools For Peace and the Personal Mandala Workbook - a unique curriculum based on the Shi-tro Mandala for Universal Peace - are like-minded with Northern Light School in its mission to transform the lives of youth.
Since 2007, Northern Light School has shared a very special and significant relationship with Tools For Peace. As a result, eighth grade students from the classes of 2008, 2009, and 2010 have participated in the Tools For Peace Teen Summer Camp in August. In September 2009, the eighth grade students from the Class of 2010 engaged in the Community Sand Mandala at Grace Cathedral with participating educational programs, Envision Schools and Aim High Summer School, creating a traditional Tibetan Shi-tro Mandala out of sand.
The impact of Tools For Peace was immediately evident among our eighth grade students, and as a result, the Tools For Peace curriculum was directly aligned with our grade four academic curriculum for the 2009-2010 academic year. Currently, the Personal Mandala Workbook is used as a textbook with our grade four students as they continue the process of creating their in-progress art exhibit, The Shi-tro Mandala Project.
Northern Light School realizes that its involvement with Tools For Peace is vital. With the guidance of the Tools For Peace team and its inspirational curriculum, our eighth grade students become outstanding community leaders who are equipped with all the necessary means for an ever-changing society: kindness, compassion, and inner peace.
